History: The Norwegian Foot March or Det Militære Marsjmerket was first held in 1915 as a test of physical endurance for Norwegian Army infantry soldiers. Soldiers were required to march 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) in less than four-and-a-half hours during a period of darkness while carrying a total weight of 11 kilograms (25 pounds) and be prepared to attack an objective at daybreak.
